  • 1 lb stale bread (brioche, challah, or French bread)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Topping:

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, cold

Instructions

  1. Cut stale bread into 1-inch cubes. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and scatter the bread inside evenly.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla, brown sugar, and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard over the bread cubes. Press and toss to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and granulated sugar. Cut in the cold butter until crumbly. Refrigerate until baking.
  5. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Sprinkle topping evenly over casserole. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and bake another 5โ€“10 minutes until golden brown and lightly crisp.
  7. Cool slightly, then serve warm with maple syrup or whipped cream.


Notes

Use day-old, rich bread like brioche or challah for the best texture. Prep the night before to let the custard absorb. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350ยฐF for 10โ€“15 minutes or microwave single servings for 60โ€“90 seconds. Customize with chocolate chips, nuts, or seasonal fruit.
