This Halloween Trifle is a spooky, crowd-pleasing dessert layered with moist chocolate cake, orange-tinted vanilla pudding, fluffy Cool Whip, and creepy candy decorations. Perfect for Halloween parties, potlucks, and family gatherings itโ€™s as fun to make as it is to eat!

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 small box instant vanilla pudding
  • 2 cups milk
  • Orange food coloring (optional)
  • 8 oz Cool Whip (thawed)

Decorations:

  • Halloween sprinkles
  • Chocolate balls wrapped like eyeballs
  • Gummy body parts (brains, teeth, worms, fingers, etc.)
  • Any other spooky candies you like

Instructions

  1. Make the Cake
  2. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and grease a small rimmed baking sheet.
  3. In a large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil, and eggs until smooth.
  4. Spread batter evenly into baking sheet and bake for 12โ€“15 minutes.
  5. Remove and let cool completely.
  6. Make the Pudding
  7. In a medium bowl, whisk pudding mix and milk until smooth.
  8. Stir in orange food coloring until desired color is reached.
  9. Refrigerate for 10โ€“15 minutes until set.
  10. Assemble the Trifle
  11. Cut cooled cake into a round (or cubes) to fit into trifle dish.
  12. Layer cake, pudding, and Cool Whip.
  13. Repeat if desired.
  14. Decorate & Serve
  15. Top with sprinkles, eyeballs, and gummy candies.
  16. Chill until serving.


Notes

  • For neater layers, use pastry bags to pipe pudding and Cool Whip.
  • Whole milk gives the creamiest pudding, but 2% works too.
  • Add Oreos for a โ€œdirtโ€ effect or candy corn for extra festivity.
