Description

A lightened-up takeout favorite this Healthy Orange Chicken combines juicy chicken breast pieces with a sweet, tangy, and savory orange sauce. Quick, nourishing, and bursting with citrus flavor, it’s a wholesome dinner ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1 1/2 cups orange juice
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 4 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or Bragg’s liquid aminos)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together all sauce ingredients. Set aside.
  2. Preheat a large skillet (preferably cast iron) on high heat. Add oil and swirl to coat.
  3. Add chicken and cook uncovered for about 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  4. Whisk sauce again and pour over chicken. Reduce heat to medium-high and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
  5. Garnish with green onion and sesame seeds. Serve hot over rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice.

Notes

  • For extra juiciness, use boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of breasts.
  • Fresh-squeezed orange juice gives the best flavor.
  • Make ahead: The sauce can be prepared up to 2 days in advance and refrigerated.
